Abstract
Evidence is presented of the nature of the resistant residue obtained from wool oxidized with peracetic acid and extracted with ammonia. The use of gold shadowing and phase contrast in optical microscopy reveals cortical cell membranes, nuclear mem branes, nuclear remnants and resistant fibrils derived from the cortex, and the composite nature of the cuticular sheath.
