A discussion of the principles underlying the measurement of fabric thickness is presented. The instruments and procedures in current use are outlined, together with their advantages and disadvantages. A procedure based on the one adopted by the British Standards Institute for measuring fabric thickness under low pressures is outlined and recommended. The necessary equipment is discussed, together with the results obtained on over 200 fabrics.
