Abstract
The cutting of thin cross sections of textiles with microtomes of various designs is well established and has been thoroughly de scribed in publications. Except for the cork method no description appears to be published for preparing very thin sections without the use of some kind of microtome. With the cork method it is not easy to cut sections sufficiently thin for best microscopical examina tions. In the following, methods are described which can be used for cutting very thin sections, as thin as can be made with a micro tome. These methods can be used with a microtome but entirely satisfactory sections for most purposes can be prepared with no special equipment of any kind.
Fundamentally these methods consist of impregnating a tuft or bundle of fibers or fabric with a material of such stiffness and tenacity that the fibers will be held in position during the cutting operation. Procedures are given in the following which have been satisfactorily employed.
