The twist multiplier (M) is a constant relating the number of turns per inch (T) given the yarn in spinning to the yarn count (C) according to the equation T = M√C.

Unpublished work by the author shows that cotton is appreciably degraded, i.e., the alpha cellulose content is decreased, by mercerization at 100° C with caustic soda solution containing only 0,01% of iron, but that it is not degraded when the iron concentration is less than this amount.

The apparatus is more elaborate than would be necessary if it were designed only for the present work. It can be used for the mercerization of skeins as well as of yarn wound on frames.
