Cottons from Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan are studied to learn whether damage to their fiber structures occurs during opening, cleaning, carding, and open-end spinning. Powder x-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy show that the crystallite size and degree of crystallinity decrease and the primary wall is visibly damaged.
