Abstract
A model of the geometry of flat braids is proposed, based on coding of the braid topology and on the minimum energy principle for the yams. The description of the geometry also takes into account minor effects, such as side crimp and yam twisting induced by skewness of the structure. The model is compared with results of an experi mental investigation of flat glass braids used as composite reinforcements. Experimental data include both optical and x-ray cross sections of the composite as well as 3D x-ray computer tomography images.
