Abstract
`Don't take it personally' is advice commonly issued to researchers to protect us from painful experiences. Such advice denies the value of our own emotional resources. This note uses my own emotional responses to my research to suggest ways in which `taking it personally' can foster a sophisticated sensibility in the research setting and enhance sociological understanding.
