Statistical Anomalies in Comparing the Sentencing of Males and Females

Abstract

Comparisons between the offences, or other characteristics, of male and female offenders given particular disposals can lead to unjustified conclusions if the data are examined without reference to the wider context of the characteristics of all offenders convicted. Two studies are discussed in which unjustified conclusions are drawn.
