Abstract
The degrees of sociological self-awareness expressed in the actor models of continuity documented for County Clare and Ashworthy are compared and contrasted. The distinction between these models is highlighted if the definition which Lévi-Strauss gives to the conscious model is borne in mind. He implicitly distinguishes between at least two types of conscious models which are mirrored in those under discussion. The theoretical problem is to identify the factors affecting the degree of sociological insight shown by people in the elaboration of conscious models about the working of their own communities.
