Abstract
The Marian Faith Healing Ministry is a Marian devotional movement within the Roman Catholic Church of Tanzania. Fr. Felician Nkwera is a central figure in the movement. The movement has grown tremendously especially in Dar es Salaam and conflict has arisen between the followers of the movement and Church officials to the point that the followers have been banned from any participation in their respective parishes. Our study of this group found that the followers are voicing a common critique of the secular analytic understanding of social change and problem-solving. They are proposing a more spiritual worldview which believes that, ultimately, the social world is controlled, influenced or changed by the active intervention of spiritual beings. While the language, symbols and concepts they use are Roman Catholic, the “consciousness” itself is reminiscent of a “popular” African worldview.
