Abstract
The author deals with the question of identity of Catholics involved in the Labour Party of Brazil and its significance on the level of the Party and the Church. The fundamental observation he makes regards the existence of a more or less common core to be found in the identifying process of this group. This core is to be found at different levels in the development of the concept of identity (projects, strategies, lived experiences) and manifests itself concretely in many ways. The author advances the hypothesis that there are four main categories: the “popular”, the “political”, the “religious” and the “independent”. A specific attitude corresponds to each category with regard to the priorities of its militant involvement.
