Abstract
The Weberian “spirit of capitalism” is both a mass phenomenon and a particular ethic. Weber said that this ethic should drive the general behaviour of our civilization until the last drop of its impetus was consumed. According to this idea, we suggest that the threat of exhaustion of natural resources is the occasion for a new societal ethic. We consider the Durkheimian theory of “moral fact” and attempt a content analysis of newspapers. Utilizing the theme of acid rain in Quebec we show that there is a relation between the two variables of the hypothesis, and explain this relationship by means of the Durkheimian theory of the sacred.
