Based upon the results of an inquiry into the membership of l'Eglise Réformée de France in the area “Centre-Alpes-Rhône”, this paper identifies some strong features of this group's culture. Long integrated in French society, “les réformés” cultivate “social individualism”, moderation and tolerance towards others. They favour a presence for their church in current affairs, because Christianity cannot be lived without commitment to the world. Their political outlook is predominantly that of moderate socialism, respectful of personal initiatives and freedoms. This culture is particularly well espoused by church activists, but is not shared by all members. A minority culture exists which focuses on moral rules, institutional regulation and rapprochement with Catholicism, favouring political neutrality for the church, but with a personal orientation towards the centre or moderate right wing.
