Il ne fait pas de doute que le jainisme, pratiqué en Inde aujourd'hui par une minorité significative, émergea à la ma nière d'un mouvement de protestation contre le brahminisme orthodoxe de la période védique. Il constitua une interpellation à l'égard de plusieurs pratiques brahmines comme, par exemple, la consommation de viande, de soma (boisson alcoolisée) ou les offrandes de sacrifices avec effusion de sang. Ces pratiques disparurent après la période védique et ce fait semble bien être un résultat de l'influence du jaïnisme sur le brahminisme.
