Abstract
Beginning with a short historical sketch, the author describes religious life in three rayons of the Azerbaidjan SSSR in the early 1960s where the dominant religion is Sunnite Islam. Considerable attention is paid to the informal religious structure as reflected in the cult of healing saints, and in the funerary ritual. He concludes that local people are not sufficiently militant against Islam.
