The author explores five hypotheses that aim to fill a gap in sociological thinking about the intersection of nation, culture and religion in the area of the former Yugoslavia. The central argument is that a distinction between “borders” and “frontiers” contributes towards a better understanding of the processes whereby culture has been radically politicized and whereby religion has been patrimonialized.

L'auteur explore cinq hypothèses pour tenter de combler les manques de la pensée sociologique concernant l'intersection entre nation, culture et religion dans l'ancienne Yougoslavie. L'argument central s'appuie sur une distinction entre 'bords' et 'frontières', permettant une meilleure compréhension des processus par lesquels la culture a été radicalement politisée et la religion a pris la forme d'un patrimoine.
