Abstract
Research on religions in China has greatly developed in the fields of social sciences and humanities in the second half of the 20th century. The author will deal with its historical background, its institutional establishment, its basic understanding of religion and related research on religions such as Buddhism, Taoism and folk religions, Christianity, Islam and other religions generally, to trace the development of religious studies as an independent discipline in the People's Republic of China.
