Abstract
The development of a goal directed simulation environrnent for discrete part manufacturing systems is discussed. A two phase approach was taken for the development of the nile base. The first phase involved studying different types of manufacturing systems in order to identify the cause-and-effect relationships that an analyst may use during analysis. Based on the "expert" knowledge identified in this phase, and subsequent experimentation, a detailed set of rules was developed. The rule base has a four level structure. Of these, Levels 2, 1, and 0 are generic, while the fourth level is comprised of information specific to the system under consideration.
