Abstract
SARPI is a computer-based simulation of a fluid processing plant, used to evaluate operator performance in managing process controls. SARPI represents a highly stylized facility, consisting of tanks, pumps, and valves where an operator can control valve settings to optimize system output or keep the system in equilibrium. It has been designed to meet the experimental requirements of researchers investigating cognitive tasks for operators and the impact of alternative display formats on operator performance. Experiments with SARPI have shown that simple modeling constructs can accurately represent complex cognitive tasks.
