Abstract
In this note we first discuss the role of computer simulation in flexible manufacturing systems (FMS) design. In using computer simulation to evaluate alternative FMS performance, we find it useful to distinguish two levels of system definition, namely: macro- and micro-level for gross and detailed simulation results, respectively. Finally, we report on the development of a microcomputer-based simulator aimed at providing industrial designers with a rapid and cost-effective aid for FMS design and appraisal.
