Abstract
Analyists can use either analog or digital techni ques to simulate complex mechanical systems. To compare these techniques, we simulated a rotor system containing a transverse crack and supported on hydro dynamic bearings. The analog simulation involved an AD 256 analog computer, while the digital simulation was based on the DARE-P package and was run on a CDC 7600. We compared the simulation techniques with respect to the complexity they could handle, their accuracy, and the cost and time they required. Both computer programs are briefly described. We modeled the rotor-bearing system with four degrees of freedom, taking into consideration the flexibil ity, damping, and cross-coupling of the hydrodynamic bearings.
