Abstract
This article will briefly describe some of the special features of standard single-chip MOS micro processors. Although these devices are very similar to larger central processing units (CPUs), technolo gical and packaging limitations as well as the needs of some common applications have created some differ ences. An understanding of these differences can often help users decide if microprocessors will be suitable for their applications.
We shall not discuss the general features of CPU architecture. Many adequate descriptions of those features are available. 1,2 Instead, we shall briefly describe the functions of CPUs and then concentrate on the implementation of those functions in micropro cessors.
