Abstract
This article covers two partial-gravity simulators being used at the Manned Spacecraft Center to acquaint astronauts with the dynamics of moon walking. The first simulator discussed, the Partial Gravity Simulator (PGS), Figures 7 and 8, is a 5 + degrees-of-freedom simulator built into a 14 x 60 foot room which is 60 feet high. The second simulator described, the Mobile Partial Gravity Simulator (MPGS), Figure 9, is a full six- degrees-of-freedom simulator utilizing a one-ton truck as the primary horizontal motion system. Construction and specific uses of the simulators are described. One astronaut, Alan Bean, reporting directly from the moon after a moon-walk, called these simulators "real good trainers."
