The application of the steepest descent technique to the solution of linkage problems is considered, using, as an example, a typical five-bar geared linkage. In a linkage design study it is necessary to be able to assess quickly the effects of changing linkage parameters on the motion of the linkage. The way in which the analogue computer can do this, using logical control and high-speed repeti tive operation, is fully discussed.
