Abstract
The problem of serving the smaller Scottish islands with an adequate medical service has existed since the middle of the nineteenth century. The problem is still unresolved. This paper examines the difficulties faced, through a historical perspective on the island of St Kilda, which lies some forty miles west of the Outer Hebrides.
