Abstract
The role of chemical messengers is considered in relation to the initiation and amplification of the immune response. The roles of pre-existing tissue factors of the complement, clotting and Kinin systems, are considered and the additional effects of the chemical mediators produced by activated lymphocytes and tissue breakdown products are described.
The final expression of the immune response appears to depend on complex inter-relationships between these factors and the cells of the lymphoid tissues. Understanding of their actions might be expected to be of value in manipulating the cell-mediated immune response in various disease states.
