Cytology is now widely used as a ‘search’ method to detect early cancer, still contained within the epithelial lining and not yet displaying the classical features of a tumour. The applications and limitations of the technique in the diagnosis of malignant disease in various sites are described. Success depends on a variety of factors including collaboration and understanding between clinician and laboratory worker.
