Abstract
This article examines the influence of Stanley Hauerwas in the context of a local Baptist church, using an exchange of sermons preached in a particular congregation between Dr. Hauerwas and Rev. Childress. Hauerwas upheld a high view of the office of priest, whereas Childress responded with a high view of the priesthood of the believers. These sermons and the article show how the work of Stanley Hauerwas contributed to helping the congregation move from an individualistic understanding of church to an understanding and practice of the church as a community.
