Abstract
Deuteronomy 15:11 proclaims, “There will always be poor people in the land ….” This declaration has been used, and abused, over and over again, in order to validate our dismissive attitudes toward alleviating poverty. However, when read in the context of verses 1−11, this reference to the persistence of poverty is “balanced” by the insistence that poverty be banished (Deut 15:4−5).
