Becoming More Christian: Bearing Mutual Witness with Muslims

Abstract

Frederick Buechner observes that “all theology, like all fiction, is at its heart autobiography.” In this article, I reflect on my own experience as one Baptist whose adult journey in Christian discipleship has taken place in the frequent company of Muslims. I seek to make sense of how God has led me from ignorance and fear to understanding and collaboration with my Muslim neighbors. My experience is only one example of the “mutual witness” that is possible between Muslims and Christians as we attend together to the work of God in the world—in history, politics, culture, and in each other.
