Abstract
A survey of disability management practitioners was conducted to delineate the knowledge and skills perceived by practitioners to be important in disability management service provision. This study explored the reported preparedness of disability management practitioners. Eight hundred participants received the Disability Management Skills Inventory (DMSI), which was developed for this investigation. A total of 311 individuals responded, for an overall response rate of 39.4%. Factor analysis of the DMSI revealed 94 knowledge and skill items distributed across three competency areas: (a) Fundamentals of Disability Management; (b) Elements of Vocational Rehabilitation; and (c) Elements of Facilitative Counseling and Advocacy. Multivariate and univariate analyses of variance revealed statistically significant differences in perceived importance of various knowledge and skill areas, depending on providers' setting and professional classification. In addition, statistically significant differences in reported preparedness in knowledge and skill areas by professional classification were found.
