Abstract
Negley K. Teeters (1896-1971) was a leading academic figure in the crusade for prison reform. This article reviews Teeters’s career and summarizes his publications on the social history of early prisons, his writings on international penology, and his review of the work of the Pennsylvania Prison Society. The relevance of Teeters’s work to contemporary scholarship and policy is noted. In addition, this article offers observations by Teeters on prisons, crime, and the academic life in his correspondence with the author.
