Recidivism of Offenders Released from Prison in North Carolina: A Gender Comparison

Abstract

Using official data, the authors compare rearrest statistics of males and females released from prison in North Carolina between July 1, 1992, and June 30, 1993. The releasees were tracked for recidivism, which was defined as fingerprinted rearrest, through January 1996. A greater percentage of males than females was rearrested in all offense categories. Logistic regression models were conducted to analyze predictors of rearrest for males and females. A number of independent variables were associated with males faring worse than females in terms of rearrest, but a number of independent variables were associated with women faring worse than men. The results are presented and discussed.
