Abstract
This article reviews the efforts of Te Puni Kokiri, The Ministry of Maori Development, to collect together statistical evidence of trends of disparity between Maori and Non-Maori in New Zealand. It argues that Te Puni Kokiri's method for measuring disparity is poorly chosen, and leads to serious distortion and an overly pessimistic presentation of the gaps in socio-economic well-being amongst ethnic groups.
