Abstract
The following is a revised, non-technical version of a paper produced by the author at the Demography Department of the University's Statistic Institute, entitled ‘A Multiple Incre-Decrement Model for a Hierarchically Graded Manpower System’. In its theoretical sense, this paper applies to any manpower system within which the employees are ranked according to seniority, and where wastage rates and promotion/demotion rates are assumed to be dependent on length of service. To test the consistency of the model, and as part of a larger study, it was applied to data from the above mentioned Police Forces from the period 1968–72, and it is these results which are presented here.
