Abstract
A new range management profession is emerging, one where technical concerns interact with broader social, economic and cultural issues. This is becoming increasingly Important as greater pressures are exerted on the rangelands from a variety of different users. New perspectives on range management suggest an increasing focus on managing risk and sustaining livelihoods in the rangelands, combined with emphasis on conflict negotiation over multiple use. New concepts, new skills and methods, and new ways of working will be vital to meet these challenges during the next century.
