Abstract
Global electronic communication has grown dramatically in recent years, and it makes heavy use of public domain software, produced on a voluntary basis and obtainable for most standard computer uses, This mode of cooperative software development could be successfully applied in agriculture, especially if cooperation between the software producers is increased and there is extensive use of electronic communication. A new European initiative, ENITA, has been set up to contribute to a new concerted mode of agricultural software development.
