Abstract
The nature of an organism is defined by its complement of genes. Molecular techniques have made it possible to unravel this inherited blueprint. The Human Genome Project has as its ultimate objective a complete description of man's genetic makeup. The development of genome maps is an important prelude to such studies. Concurrently the genomes of livestock species are also being mapped. In this Paper we focus on the mapping methods, the status of the human and livestock gene maps and the potential uses of the maps.
