This paper is concerned with the best ways of using captive bolt and electrical stunning. It gives practical recommendations on how to apply and assess the effectiveness of captive bolt stunning in cattle and electrical stunning in sheep, pigs, calves and poultry. Some of the carcass quality problems associated with particular stunning methods are outlined, along with ways of reducing their severity.
