Abstract
This is the second in a series of occasional articles on the changing face of Chinese agriculture, looking at the effects of government policies on the productivity of farms. Rural economic reform since 1980 has done much to improve performance, and output of major crops such as grain, cotton and oilseeds has increased by a large margin. However, meagre government support for agriculture in the past 3 years has slowed down the rate of progress.
