Abstract
Linum usitatissimum (Linaceae) is a cultivated dicotyledonous annual plant which has few equals in its capacity to supply different raw materials for a variety of purposes. Its production worldwide has increased dramatically in recent years and its potential for industrial use has been improved through plant breeding and husbandry. New processes and novel technologies are currently being developed in multi-national projects which receive support from governments and industry. There is every indication that this crop will become an important industrial resource in the coming years.
