Abstract
The German Federal Republic presently conducts three sanitary programmes:
– Prophylactic measures against FMD (Foot and Mouth Disease) and emergency procedures to be taken in the event of an outbreak,
– A federal eradication programme against bovine leukosis based on serology. Seropositive cattle are removed from the herd, with the owner's consent.
– A voluntary programme designed to reduce the number of BHVI (bovine rhinotracheitis) seropositive herds. This is a federal programme adapted for individual conditions in the various states.
The other virus diseases of cattle are, for the moment, unsuitable candidates for national sanitary programmes.
