Abstract
Agroforestry is an approach to land-use and the management of plants and animals that ‘fits’ in certain circumstances, that addresses particular needs or fulfils particular aspirations. Underlying trends favouring integrated approaches which take account of people and the environment, overproduction and surpluses, public concerns over animal welfare and the environment, a growing demand for countryside-based recreation, and future wood supply and demand, seem to provide the circumstances favourable for agroforestry in the EC. Its future prospects depend both on understanding its nature and characteristics, and adopting the criteria and objectives it fulfils.
