Abstract
Many respiratory diseases of housed farm livestock are difficult or impossible to eradicate or control by vaccination. In these circumstances, producers are advised to ‘improve’ their housing, although this advice may have little, if any, scientific foundation. This article reports work in progress on a strategic study of the Interactions between pathogens, host and environment in animal houses and outlines the principles that determine what can and cannot be done to control respiratory disease through improvements to housing.
