Pearl millet has long been an important grain crop in Africa and India, annual production being around 10 million tonnes. Although the yield is relatively low this is offset by its ability to survive under unfavourable conditions of soil and climate. The crop's potential is now being actively investigated, especially as growing population requires increased cultivation of marginal land.
