Chemical pesticides present problems not only on general environmental grounds but because many are relatively short-lived after application and may also destroy natural predators of the target pest. There is, therefore, growing interest in the breeding of naturally resistant plants. This article reviews the possibilities of transgenic varieties in which a resistant mechanism has been created by gene transfer from other plants.
