Abstract
The frequent and indiscriminate use of insecticides which destroy pests and their predators alike can prove disastrous to cotton in polycrop systems. Field trials over four years in Tamil Nadu indicate that in India better results can be obtained if less use is made of insecticides and more pests are eliminated by management systems, including hand picking. They also suggest that on village farms cotton varieties with medium sized bolls, medium duration types may be more productive than some of the broad-leaved, long duration types with large bolls.
