Abstract

Although the mechanism of reproduction in the angiosperms has long been known, the reasons why the pistil is not fertilized by the pollen of foreign species, nor generally even by its own pollen, are only comparatively recently becoming apparent. Research indicates that pollen-pistil relationships are in many ways analogous to the immunological systems of vertebrates. It has very important practical implications for the plant breeder.
