Abstract
Although the selective activity of certain antibiotics against a wide range of plant pests and diseases has been known for many years, relatively little use has been made of them in agriculture. In this field, serious interest in them is at present largely restricted to Japan. There blasticidin S and kasugamycin are used to control blast disease in rice and polyoxins and validamycins against rice sheath blight. This article examines the reasons for this lack of interest and reviews recent achievements.
