The clearing of arable fields after harvest by burning the straw is an established agricultural practice. It has the advantage of being quick and cheap and of destroying a variety of pests. Today, however, it is widely regarded as an antisocial practice, causing pollution and presenting a serious fire hazard; in many countries increasingly stringent regulations are being enforced to control it. This article reviews the alternative method of disposing of straw by incorporating it in the soil.
